Cross-cutting Themes
Regeneration Cross-Cutting Theme
Introduction
The Devon Strategic Partnership is committed to assisting regeneration of those communities in Devon which are amongst the 25% most deprived in the country
These "priority communities" are:
- Phase 1: Ilfracombe, wards of Barnstaple and Exeter, Princetown, Bideford, rural Torridge and Teignmouth.
- Phase 2: Westward Ho!, Tiverton, Dawlish, Newton Abbot, Seaton.
This aspiration is expressed in the LAA regeneration cross-cutting theme. The causes of disadvantage are varied and multiple and the most effective action is delivered through partnerships which include community representatives and a number of agencies.
Many of the communities currently regarded as "disadvantaged" have been so for decades, a pattern which is reflected nationally. The fact that the issues are so persistent, and pernicious, is not a reason to give up but should serve as motivation to re-double efforts and to do so in a more concerted way. While there are many individual schemes in progress in different parts of each community, there is most certainly potential for more 'joined up' working. Strategically, the LAA offers a series of topics and resources which are being co-ordinated and given a stronger focus. This is complemented by a neighbourhood dimension in order to deliver improvements in the quality of life which are most important to those communities.
Governance
This cross-cutting theme is governed by Common Ground which sits under the Sustainable Devon Group in the Devon Strategic Partnership governance arrangements.
LAA Outcome
The LAA outcome for 2007-2008 is:
- Reduce the gap between Devon 's most deprived communities (those that fall in the 25% most deprived IMD 2004) and the rest of Devon .
- Develop at least 2 major projects in each of the phase 1 communities.
